Dental Plan Or Treatment Plan? Do You Know The Difference?

Canadians are blessed with one of the highest standards of oral health care in the world and this is due, in part, to the fact that most Canadians have some kind of dental coverage. Employers and government may offer a dental plan for a variety of reasons, including promoting good health. They also view health and dental plans as a way to keep their work force healthy and fit, and to attract and retain top-notch employees.

It is important to remember that a dental plan is not a form of insurance. It is actually an economic benefit that your employer contracts with a plan carrier to provide on your behalf. It is also important to remember that you are a partner in your oral health, and that treatment and care decisions should be made by you and your dentist based on your actual needs, independent of your plan coverage.

A dental plan is a way of helping you cover the cost of dental care. However, your dental plan may not cover the full costs of the specific treatment you require. A dental plan is not a treatment plan.

You should not allow your dental plan to dictate the care you receive. Only you and your dentist can decide the treatment plan that best meets your specific needs and circumstances.

If you do not have a plan, talk to your dentist about options to help you manage the cost of treatment.

By taking care of your dental health you are making a long-term investment in your own well being and that of your family. If you have a dental plan that covers most of the costs associated with dental care needs, you are indeed fortunate.

As with anything worth while, good health cannot be neglected. It requires a commitment and an investment in both time and resources. Statistics have shown that the cost of good hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing, combined with regular preventive visits to the dentist is far less than the cost of neglect. In the long term, you and your family will benefit greatly by making an ongoing commitment to be a partner in your oral health.
